The anxious & avoidant connection - Tunde Awosika the Attachment style Coach

Why are anxious and avoidants so drawn to each other?

People love to say anxious and avoidant partners are a terrible match. And yet, they keep finding each other. Not accidentally. Not randomly. There is a reason the pull feels real before it feels painful.

A big part of it is trait admiration. You are drawn to qualities your nervous system does not naturally hold. Anxious people often admire how avoidants seem grounded, self directed, and emotionally contained. They are not overthinking every moment. They appear steady. That calm can feel like relief.

Avoidants, on the other hand, are often drawn to warmth. Anxious partners are emotionally expressive, attentive, and open. They notice. They engage. They create connection without needing to be asked. Early on, that can feel safe and even nourishing to someone who is not used to emotional consistency.

Both people want connection. They just go about it differently. One moves toward closeness to feel safe. The other creates space to feel safe. In the beginning, those differences can complement each other. It feels balanced. Easy, even.

The trouble starts when attraction gets mistaken for long term compatibility. The traits you admire can slowly turn into triggers once stress and vulnerability enter the picture. Calm can feel like distance. Attunement can feel like pressure.

The pull is not the problem. Understanding what is underneath it is where things start to change.

Most people think closure is about clarity, but it’s really about comfort. You want the other person to walk you through what happened so you don’t...

Finally, Break the Anxious Preoccupied Script I want to talk about something small that feels big. You say the thing. The vulnerable thing. It doesn’t even have to be dramatic. It could be as simple as, “Hey, that bothered me,” or “Can we talk about something?” And then the response comes back… neutral. Not mean. Not explosive. Just not what your body was hoping for. If you’re being honest, that’s the moment everything shifts. Your chest tightens. Your brain starts scanning. You replay your...

The Weekly Newsletter Most people I talk to aren’t confused about what their attachment style is. They’re exhausted by how much power it still has over their decisions. They think they’re behind. Too old. Too single. Too deep into a relationship that feels misaligned but familiar. They assume transformation is something that should have happened earlier, with a different partner, under better circumstances. So they wait. For clarity. For confidence. For the right moment. That moment doesn’t...
